Leadership isn’t a title, its a skill

SPOILER: No Promotion required!

The Myth of The “Born Leader”

Let’s get this out of the way: leadership is not genetic. You weren’t born with or without it. You weren’t skipped over because you didn’t do debate club or grow up running lemonade stands.

Leadership is a skill! and like all skills, it can be learned, practiced, and improved. Whether you’re leading a team, a project, or just trying to get through a team meeting without chaos, you’re already in the game.

So What Is Leadership Really?

Forget power poses and pep talks. At its core, leadership is:

  • Influencing others toward a shared goal

  • Taking responsibility (even when it’s not technically your job)

  • Creating a space where people can do their best work

It’s less “Look at me, I’m the boss!” and more “How can I help this group succeed?”

The Mindset Shift From “Me to We”

Great leaders don’t think in terms of ego, they think in terms of impact.
They ask:

  • “How can I bring out the best in others?”

  • “What does this team need right now?”

  • “How do I show up, even when things are messy?”

Leadership is often invisible work, supporting, encouraging, redirecting, and occasionally saying, “Hey, we can do better.”

Leading Without the Title

You can lead from anywhere in an organisation. Yes, even if you're not the manager.

Try this:

  • Step up when something needs doing (without waiting to be asked)

  • Encourage others and amplify their ideas

  • Give credit generously

  • Handle conflict maturely (no eye rolls, no group chats)

This builds trust, credibility, and momentum AKA leadership in action.

Small Things That Make Big Leadership Impacts

Be consistent. People trust what they can count on.

  • Communicate clearly. Say what you mean, kindly and directly.

  • Take ownership. If you mess up, admit it. If the team wins, share the credit.

  • Be emotionally aware. Know when someone needs space… or support… or a snack. (Snacks are Really important!)… just start with a snack!

Final Thoughts: You’re more of a Leader Than You Think

If you’ve ever stepped up when things got tough, helped someone grow, or quietly held a team together with patience and snacks congrats, you’ve led.

So don’t wait for a job title to tell you you’re a leader. Just start leading.
